The Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist

Everything worth deep cleaning this spring, organised room by room, so nothing gets missed and nothing takes longer than it needs to.

What Is Spring Cleaning, Exactly?

Spring cleaning is a once-a-year deep clean that goes beyond your normal weekly routine — things like washing windows and curtains, cleaning behind and under furniture, flipping mattresses, wiping inside cupboards, and clearing out anything you no longer need. It typically takes a full weekend for an average NZ home.

The idea isn’t to clean everything at once in a panic. It’s to work through each room methodically, one zone at a time, so the whole home gets refreshed without you burning out on day one.

Kitchen Spring Cleaning Checklist

A kitchen spring clean covers the fridge (including door seals and under-shelf spills), a full oven degrease, wiping down cabinet fronts and handles, descaling the kettle, and clearing out the pantry to check use-by dates. These are the spots a weekly wipe-down never reaches.

  • Empty and wipe down the fridge, including door seals and under-shelf spills
  • Clean inside the oven and run a self-clean or degreasing soak
  • Wipe out pantry shelves and check use-by dates while you’re in there
  • Descale the kettle and clean the microwave inside and out
  • Pull out the fridge and stove to sweep and mop behind them

Bathroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

A bathroom spring clean means descaling the showerhead and taps, scrubbing grout lines, cleaning behind the toilet base, washing the shower curtain or wiping the glass tracks, and clearing the extractor fan cover of dust. Limescale and grout build-up are the two things routine cleans usually miss.

  • Deep clean grout, silicone seals and the extractor fan cover
  • Descale the showerhead and taps in a enzyme cleaner soak
  • Wash the shower curtain or clean the glass runners
  • Clear out expired toiletries and wipe down cabinet shelves

Bedroom & Living Room Spring Cleaning Checklist

Flip or rotate mattresses, wash pillows and duvets on a hot cycle, vacuum under the bed and behind furniture, wipe down skirting boards and light switches, and clean windows inside and out including tracks and sills.

  1. Strip and wash all bedding, pillow protectors and duvet covers on the hottest safe setting.
  2. Flip or rotate the mattress and vacuum both sides before remaking the bed.
  3. Move furniture to vacuum and mop the floor underneath, including behind the couch.
  4. Wash windows inside and out, and clear dust and grime from the tracks and sills.
  5. Wipe skirting boards, light switches and door handles, which get overlooked in the weekly clean.

How Long Does a Full Spring Clean Take?

For an average 3-bedroom NZ home, a full spring clean takes 6-8 hours if you’re working alone, or a single weekend split across two days. Tackling one room per session, rather than the whole house in one go, makes it far less overwhelming.

If time is the real obstacle, this is exactly the kind of job a one-off deep clean from a professional team can take off your plate — leaving your regular weekly clean to simply maintain the reset afterwards.

💡 Stephanie’s Tip

Work top to bottom in every room — dust falls. Start with light fittings and shelves, finish with the floor, and you’ll never re-clean a surface twice.

💡 Did You Know?

The “spring cleaning” tradition dates back centuries, when homes needed a thorough airing and soot-clean after a winter of fires and closed windows — the same logic still applies today, minus the soot.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to spring clean in NZ?

September to November works well for most NZ homes, once winter dampness has cleared but before summer entertaining season starts. That said, a “spring clean” is really about a seasonal deep clean and can be done at any time that suits.

What’s the difference between spring cleaning and a regular clean?

A regular clean covers surfaces you use daily — benches, floors, bathrooms. Spring cleaning goes further: behind and under furniture, inside appliances, windows and tracks, mattresses, and cupboards that don’t get touched week to week.

Do I need special products for spring cleaning?

No. Most of a spring clean can be done with the same all-purpose cleaner, enzyme cleaner and microfibre cloths you already use — the difference is where you’re cleaning, not what you’re cleaning with.

Should I declutter before or after cleaning?

Declutter first, room by room. It’s far easier to clean a shelf or drawer once you’ve removed what you don’t need, rather than cleaning around clutter and having to do it again later.

The Bottom Line

Spring cleaning doesn’t need to happen in one exhausting day. Work through one room at a time using the checklists above, and your whole home gets the reset it needs.
