New Zealand’s damp winters make bathrooms a magnet for mould. Here’s how to remove it safely with a low-tox enzyme cleaner, and stop it from coming back.
Mould grows in bathrooms when moisture from showers and baths has nowhere to escape. New Zealand’s humid, temperature-swinging climate makes this worse: warm, damp air condenses on cool tiles, grout and ceilings, and mould spores (always present in the air) settle in and start feeding on soap scum, dust and skin cells within 24-48 hours.
The three ingredients mould needs are moisture, warmth and a food source — and a typical Kiwi bathroom, especially one without an extractor fan or opening window, supplies all three every single day.
Villas and older character homes around the North Shore are particularly prone to it, since many were built before extractor fans were standard and rely on a small window that’s rarely left open in winter.
Spray a concentrated enzyme cleaner directly onto the mould, leave it for 10-15 minutes so the enzymes can break down the mould’s food source, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. For stubborn grout stains, follow with a baking soda paste, scrub again, and rinse clean.
Enzyme cleaners outperform bleach for long-term mould removal. Bleach only kills surface mould and doesn’t penetrate porous materials like grout or silicone, so mould often regrows within weeks.
