Vacuuming keeps carpet looking tidy, but it is not the same as a deep clean. Here is how often each one actually needs to happen.
If you are wondering how often to clean your carpets, the honest answer depends on foot traffic, pets, and who is living in the house. Below is the schedule we use with our own clients across Auckland’s North Shore, plus the signs your carpet is overdue.
Vacuum carpets 1-2 times a week, more often in hallways and living areas. Alongside that, most homes need a full carpet clean every 6-12 months, dropping to every 3-4 months for households with pets, young kids, or allergy sufferers. Light-traffic homes can often stretch to once a year.
Vacuuming lifts surface dust and crumbs, but it cannot reach what has worked its way down into the pile. Grit, skin cells, pollen and pet dander settle deep in the fibres over time, which is exactly what a proper carpet clean is designed to lift out.
We use hot water extraction paired with a low-tox, enzyme-based pre-treatment on stains and heavy-traffic areas, rather than anything vinegar or bleach based. It breaks down the grime without leaving a residue that attracts more dirt afterwards.
High-traffic areas like hallways, entryways and living rooms need vacuuming 2-3 times a week. Bedrooms and low-traffic rooms can go once a week. Homes with pets or young kids usually need every area vacuumed every other day to stop hair, crumbs and dirt building up.
Most NZ households need a professional carpet clean every 6-12 months. Homes with pets, kids, or allergy sufferers do better every 3-4 months, since dander, pollen and bacteria build up faster than vacuuming alone can manage. Rentals typically need one before the tenant moves out.
Musty smells, visible traffic lanes or dark patches, stains that will not lift when vacuumed, matted or flattened pile, and allergy symptoms that ease when you leave the house are all signs your carpet needs cleaning sooner rather than later.
Vacuuming keeps the surface clean, but it cannot remove what has worked down into the carpet backing. A deep clean using hot water extraction lifts out the dirt, allergens and bacteria that build up between vacuums, so both are needed for a genuinely clean carpet.
Most tenancy agreements in NZ require a professional carpet clean at the end of a tenancy, regardless of how recently it was last done. Check your agreement, but budget for one clean as part of your end-of-tenancy routine.
A hired or rented carpet cleaner can lift surface-level dirt, but professional hot water extraction reaches deeper and dries faster with less risk of mould from over-wetting. For light-traffic homes without pets, a DIY clean between professional visits is usually fine.
Not when it is done properly. Over-wetting or harsh scrubbing can wear carpet down, but professional hot water extraction with a low-tox, enzyme-based solution is gentle on fibres and is actually what keeps carpet looking newer for longer.
Most carpets are dry within 4-8 hours with good airflow, though thicker pile or humid weather can push that closer to 24 hours. Opening windows and running a fan or dehumidifier speeds things up.
Vacuum high-traffic areas two to three times a week, and book a full carpet clean every 6-12 months, or every 3-4 months if you have pets, kids, or allergy sufferers in the house. Staying ahead of it keeps carpet looking newer for longer and cuts down on trapped allergens.
