What to Do Before Your Cleaner Arrives: A Simple Auckland Checklist

A few minutes of tidying goes a long way. Here’s exactly what to do, and what to leave to us, before your Clean for Good team arrives.

Do You Need to Clean Before Your Cleaner Arrives?

No, you don’t need to clean your home before your cleaner arrives, that’s exactly what you’re paying for. A quick tidy of clutter, dishes and laundry beforehand simply means your team spends their time actually cleaning rather than tidying, so you get more value from every visit.

There’s an easy way to think about it. Tidying is picking things up. Cleaning is getting rid of dirt and grime. Our team is there for the second part. The more benchtops, floors and surfaces we can get to without moving toys, mail or dishes out of the way first, the more time goes into the parts of your home that actually need a professional touch.

Your Pre-Clean Checklist, Room by Room

If you only have ten minutes before your cleaner arrives, focus on clearing surfaces rather than deep cleaning anything yourself. Here’s what actually helps, room by room.

  • Kitchen: clear benchtops of dishes, small appliances and food packaging, and empty or load the dishwasher so the sink is free.
  • Bathroom: put toiletries, hair tools and products back in cupboards, and hang up any damp towels.
  • Bedrooms: pick clothing, shoes and toys up off the floor so we can vacuum properly underneath.
  • Living areas: clear coffee tables and shelves of anything you’d rather we worked around than dusted.
  • Whole home: pop the bins out if it’s collection day, and let us know about anything fragile, off-limits or needing extra care.

What to Put Away Before Your Cleaner Arrives

Our teams are trained employees, not casual contractors, and every clean is fully insured. Even so, it’s good practice to put a few things aside before any tradesperson visits your home, cleaner included.

  • Medications: put prescription medication away, particularly if you have children or pets in the home.
  • Fragile or sentimental items: let your team know about anything delicate you’d rather they cleaned around than moved.

None of this is about trust, it’s simply good habit, and it takes the guesswork out of your visit for everyone. If you’d like to know more about how we vet and manage our team, our guide to whether cleaning companies are insured in New Zealand covers it in more detail.

Do You Need to Be Home When Your Cleaner Arrives?

Not necessarily. Plenty of our regular Auckland clients are at work during their scheduled clean and provide a key, alarm code or lockbox instead. For your first visit, we’ll usually arrange a complimentary home visit beforehand so we can walk through the house together, talk through your priorities and agree on access. That means there’s no need to be home for the clean itself unless you’d prefer to be.

Getting Ready for Your Clean with Pets in the House

If you’ve got a cat, dog or anything in between, a little planning helps everyone have a calmer visit. Popping pets into a separate room, the yard or their usual daytime spot means our team can move through your home efficiently, and your pet isn’t startled by a vacuum or an unfamiliar face. Let us know about any pets in advance, including where they’ll be and whether they’re comfortable with visitors.

Our enzyme-based cleaning system is chosen with families and pets in mind, though as with any cleaning product, we recommend keeping curious pets off freshly cleaned surfaces until they’re dry, and following the same care instructions we would for any home.

What to Expect at Your First Clean

Every Clean for Good quote starts with a complimentary, no-obligation home visit. We’ll walk through your home, talk about what matters most to you, and put together a tailored plan before your first booking, whether that’s a regular weekly or fortnightly clean, a one-off deep clean before guests arrive, or a final clean ahead of a rental inspection.

From there, our trained employee team arrives with our own enzyme-based products and HEPA-filtered equipment, so all you need to do is the quick tidy above.

💡 Stephanie’s Tip

Keep a small basket by the door. Toys, mail and odd shoes go in it before we arrive, and you sort it properly later. It’s the single fastest way to clear a room.

💡 Did You Know?

A tidy surface isn’t just faster to clean, it’s safer too. Loose cords, toys and clutter are the main things that slow a professional team down or get in the way of a thorough clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the “5-5-5 rule” for cleaning?

You may come across tips online like the “5-5-5 rule” for tidying before guests or cleaners arrive. It’s not an official standard and definitions vary, but the general idea is spending a few minutes clearing visible surfaces in a handful of rooms. You don’t need to follow any particular method, our room-by-room checklist above covers what actually helps your cleaning team.

What is the “6/10 rule” for cleaning?

Like the 5-5-5 rule, the “6/10 rule” is an informal tidying idea rather than a set standard. The simplest approach is to clear loose items and surfaces so your cleaning team can get straight to work, which is exactly what our checklist above is designed to help with.

How much can a professional cleaner get done in one visit?

This depends on your home’s size and how much needs doing, so it varies from visit to visit. For a full breakdown by home size, see our guide to how long house cleaning takes.

Do I need to provide my own cleaning products?

No. Clean for Good brings our own enzyme-based cleaning system and professional equipment, including HEPA-filtration vacuums, to every visit. You don’t need to supply anything unless you have a specific product you’d like us to use on a particular surface.

What if I forget to tidy before my cleaner arrives?

It’s not a problem. Your team will simply spend a little more time tidying loose items before they can clean surfaces properly, which may mean less time available for other tasks that visit. It’s worth a few minutes beforehand if you can, but it’s never a reason to cancel or feel embarrassed.

Can I leave a key or access instructions instead of being home?

Yes. Many of our regular clients provide a key, alarm code or lockbox access so cleaning can go ahead on schedule even when they’re at work. We’ll agree on secure access arrangements with you during your complimentary home visit before your first clean.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to clean before your cleaner arrives, a quick tidy of clutter, valuables and pets is all it takes. The rest, the actual cleaning, is what we’re there for. If you’re getting ready for your first visit, our complimentary home visit is the easiest way to set expectations and make sure your first clean gets off to a great start.
